W.R. KETTERMAN BREAKS THEN WINS TOP ET SATURDAY NIGHT - HOPE CLARKE TAKES $1500 JR. DRAGSTER WIN

By Charlie Brown, Delmar, DE – Night one of the two-day William J. & Juanita Cathell 54th Anniversary Chevy Show, Shine and Drags provided plenty of speed and plenty of cash to the top finishers Saturday night at the U.S. 13 Dragway. Taking big wins were: W.R. Ketterman of Salisbury, Md. in Top ET; Neal Huber of Queen Anne, Md. in Mod ET; Roland Powell, Jr. of Salisbury in Pro Bike; Paul Costley of Lancaster, Pa. in Street Eliminator; Denny Johnson of Laurel, Del. in Hot Rod and Hope Clarke of Parsonsburg, Md. in Jr. Dragster. Competition in both Top ET and Mod ET was run in the eighth-mile.

When W.R. Ketterman’s car broke an imput shaft in the first round he could have easily packed it up and gone home. Instead, Ketterman and his crew went to work fixing the car in time to buy back into round two. From that round on Ketterman was flawless making it to the final round against Hank Usilton. Usilton gave it his best but was too quick and broke out running a 5.846/116.38 on a 5.88 dial-in. Ketterman was almost dead on his dial running a 4.561/149.92 on a 4.56 dial scoring the $3000 comeback win. Semi-finalists were Wayne Patton who lost to Usilton and Vernon Russell who lost to Ketterman.

In the Mod ET final it was the Monte Carlo of Neal Huber taking on the ‘55 Chevy of Ronnie Bishop. Bishop fouled at the start with a red light and Huber collected the $1000 win with a 6.249/110.15 on a 6.20 dial. Semi-finalist was Daryl Beauchamp who lost to Bishop while Huber had the bye.

Roland Powell, Jr. on his Suzuki rode up against Marquise Blake on his GSXR 1000 in the Outten Bros. Furniture of Salisbury Pro Bike final. Blake fouled with a -.007 red light and Powell, Jr. made a full pass for the win running an 8.596/145.98 on an 8.54 dial. Semi-finalist was Thomas Graves who lost to Powell, Jr. while Blake had the bye.

Paul Costley in his Monte Carlo took the Street final over Jonathan Osowiecki in his Chevy S-10 truck. Osowiecki had a -.002 red light foul and Costley ran an 11.854/110.44 on an 11.88 dial for the win. In Hot Rod it was Denny Johnson in his ‘79 Camaro taking the win over Urias Shockley in his ‘10 Dodge. Johnson ran a 10.204/122.69 on a 10.15 dial while Shockley had a 16.125/87.60 on a 15.80 dial.

Jr. Dragster 1 and Jr. Dragster 2 combined with some gracious sponsors stepping up to provide $1500 to the overall winner and paying the Junior racers entry fee! In the final it was Hope Clarke taking home the huge payday over Ethan Hubbard. Clarke won the race off the start with a .021 reaction light to Hubbard’s .055. Clarke finished out the run with a 7.945/82.49 on a 7.92 dial. Hubbard was close running a 7.916/81.32 on a 7.90 dial.
