INSLEY WINS SUPER – CHAMPIONS CROWNED SUNDAY

By Charlie Brown, Delmar, DE (9/4/11) – A great crowd and a large field of show cars and race cars turned out for Sunday’s 5th Annual Ford Motorsports Show sponsored by the Cheswold Connection Ford Racing and the U.S. 13 Dragway.

 

Sunday was the final points event of the season and the following drag racers were crowned champions in their divisions for 2011: Vernon Russell of Dover, Del. in Super Pro; Phillip Truitt of Parsonsburg, Md. in Pro; James Farmer of Denton, Md. in Pro Bike; Chelsea Williams of Seaford, Del. in Street; Tyler Powell of Delmar, Md. in Jr. Dragster 1 and Paul Riddle, Jr. of Millsboro, Del. in Jr. Dragster 2.

 

Sunday’s winners included: Bobby Insley of Crisfield, Md. in Super Pro; Glenn Groton of Salisbury, Md. in Pro; Ash Hayward of Fruitland, Md.; Curtis Williams of Bridgeville, Del. in Street; Tony Mumford of Berlin, Md. in Bike Trophy; Alexis Truitt of Parsonsburg in Jr. Dragster 1; Paul Riddle, Jr. in Jr. Dragster 2 and Kevin Grasson of Olney, Md. in the 422 Motorosports All Stars.

 

Bobby Insley faced Jim Swagler of Berlin in the Super Pro final. Insley sealed the win at the start with a perfect .000 reaction and then ran his dial with a 7.864/164.44 on a 7.86 dial. Swagler, in his ’55 Chevy had a .014 reaction and broke out with an 8.948/146.08 on an 8.96 dial. Semi-finalist was Don Teague of Newark, Del. who lost to Insley.

 

In Pro it was Glenn Groton going up against Toya Peek of Houston, Del. Peek had mechanical problems preventing a pass and Groton took the win with a 14.947 on a 10.52 dial. Semi-finalist was Andy Davenport of Seaford who lost to Groton.

 

Ash Hayward rode into the Pro Bike final along with James Farmer. Hayward had the better reaction and took the win with a 9.496/131.38 on a 9.40 dial. Farmer had a 9.260/135.95 on an 8.96 dial. Semi-finalists were Marlon Smith of Lincoln, Del. who lost to Hayward and Morgan Hudson of Berlin who lost to Farmer.

 

It was Chelsea Williams and Curtis Williams in the Street Eliminator final. Chelsea broke out with an 11.432/115.10 on an 11.48 dial and Curtis got the victory with an 11.860/110.53 on an 11.85 dial.

 

In the Bike Trophy final it was Tony Mumford taking on Harvey Powell of Salisbury. Powell had the better reaction but Mumford had the better run and took the win with a 9.296/144.85 on a 9.25 dial. Powell, on his Kawasaki quad ran a 17.182/65.88 on a 17.10 dial.

 

The Jr. Dragster 1 final saw Alexis Truitt facing Tyler Powell. Truitt had the better reaction and took the win with an 8.965/69.33 on an 8.93 dial. Powell ran an 8.937/72.26 on an 8.91 dial. In Jr. Dragster 2, Paul Riddle, Jr. was paired against Herby Sullivan of Ridgely, Md. Sullivan had a .001 red light foul and the win went to Riddle who ran a 7.917/81.78 on a 7.92 dial.

 

The 422 Motorsports All Stars were on hand with their beautiful nostalgia racers. Taking the win in the final was Kevin Grasson in his ’64 Dodge over Ed Youmans of Oaks, Pa. in his ’65 Plymouth. Grasson ran a 10.441/105.56 on a 10.20 dial while Youmans had a 10.043/145.06 on a 9.00 dial. Semi-finalist was Anthony Papps of Oaks in his ’64 Ford Thunderbolt who lost to Grasson.

 

This Sunday will be the rescheduled 48th Anniversary William J. Cathell Super Chevy Show Shine and Drags along with Jerry Ketterman’s Super Bad 8. Gates open at 9 a.m. with show registration from 9 a.m. until noon. Time Trials begin at 10 a.m. and general admission is just $12.
